With all the Christmas stuff going on, I decided to tell the truth and explain to Keke that Santa isn't real. Sorry folks.. if you didn't know the real reason for this season it is the beautiful birth of our savior Jesus Christ.
Santa (or better Saint Nicholas) was a bishop of the Catholic church, known for his secret giving to the poor, his traditions were well known and carried out for years. Saint Nicholas had compassion on those weaker & poorer, exactly what Christ had hoped and intended we would be doing during this season of rememberance & celebration.
Unfortunately, today Saint Nicholas is a marketing tool to lure kids into wanting more than what they have.. and to parents who want to give our children as much as we can. Sadly, this takes away the real blessings that come from Christmas - a time that we honor and humble ourselves to what Jesus came here for. I think the beauty in Christmas is the time we spend with our loved ones and helping those in need.
So I decided, based upon my own convictions, that telling my children the truth now would be better for them in the long run. To know fact from fiction. Reindeer do not fly, elves do not live in a North Pole castle where they spend 364 days building toys, {and I'm pretty sure that parents out there would rather have the credit given to them than some magical fictional story}, etc.
I admit that this has been a concerning topic for me for some time. I have avoided things like Easter bunnies, Jack O' lanterns, Santa & his reindeer; while I am not outright against the celebrations of those seasons, I do believe that they should be well thought through and if I want my children to grow up believing in the truth of the Bible then I must make choices to tell them the whole truth. I have found some really great resources online for the topic of Christmas & teaching to young children, I would encourage you to take a look around.
